Guidelines For Southwest Change Name On Ticket
Similar to any other major airline, Southwest has issued specific guidelines under its Change Name policy. Here’s what you need to know before you change your name on your Southwest ticket.
- If you have booked a flight within the previous 24 hours, Southwest recommends canceling the booking and using the full refund value to make a fresh reservation with the correct name.
- Changing a passenger’s name on a Southwest ticket shall be only allowed once.
- Southwest Airlines allows both minor (typo correction) and major (last name) changes to the passenger’s name on the ticket.
- The entire passenger name cannot be changed on a Southwest flight ticket.
- Name change on Southwest tickets is permitted only up to 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure.
- If your name has been changed legally, you must provide supporting legal documents (more on legal name change below).
- Any name changes on Southwest tickets must be done only to match the passenger’s name on their passport and other government-issued IDs.
- Passengers are also eligible for the addition of the Last Name and correcting inverted names.
Note: If your Southwest booking was not directly made through the airline’s official channels, you must request the name change on the ticket via the third-party service only.
Types of Southwest Name Change On Ticket
As mentioned in the Southwest Change Name Policy section, name changes are categorized into two different sections – Spelling Correction and a Legal Name Change. Both these name change types are discussed in detail below:
Spelling Correction
Spelling correction or ‘Minor Name Changes’ in First, Middle, and Last names can be done on Southwest’s tickets. Even though Southwest hasn’t provided detailed guidelines on such changes, most major airlines allow passengers to correct a maximum of 3 characters in their name on tickets. Spelling corrections can be done easily and do not require the submission of any legal documents.
Legal Name Change
A Legal Name Change is considered to be a ‘Major Name Change’. If your name has been changed legally, for example, due to marriage or divorce, you can opt for a legal name change. Legal name change requests may take slightly longer than mere spelling corrections as you will be required to submit the supporting documents such as a marriage license, court order, or any other relevant legal document.
Southwest Name Change Fee
Southwest Airlines promotes a zero change fee policy. This means that passengers are eligible to make changes to their booking without any additional fee up to 10 minutes prior to the flight’s scheduled departure. This policy is also applicable to passenger’s name change on ticket. In the case of a name change, you must make your request at least 24 hours prior to the departure.
